Major League Soccer’s annual Superdraft took place on Jan. 15 and there was one name selected that stood out to fans of USF men’s soccer: Miguel Aguilar. The senior forward, who scored 15 goals and tallied nine assists for the Dons over his four year career, was selected 17th overall by D.C. United. United, who finished first overall in the Eastern conference last season, was among a number of MLS teams that were impressed by Aguilar’s showings at the MLS combine in Ft. What was already a successful regular season for USF only got better this past week. The Dons did what they could to solidify their case for the playoffs by dominating Pacific 4-1 and Santa Clara 2-0 in two weekend games at Negoesco Stadium. Unfortunately, the Dons’ consecutive wins were not enough to earn them an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament, as the team did not hear its name called on selection day. With the two wins, the Dons finished the season with a record of 11-6-2 (5-2 West Coast Conference), improving on their 7-11-2 (4-7-1 WCC) record from 2013. After the Dons’ two games this past weekend, their 3-0 start to West Coast Conference play is beginning to feel like a distant memory.

In what was their most crucial two- game stretch of the season, USF surren dered late-game goals in a pair of 2-1 losses that came on the road against the Loyola Marymount Lions on Fri- day, Nov. 7, and at Negoesco Stadium against the San Diego Toreros on Sun- day, Nov. 9. With the losses, and with San Diego’s win, the Dons (9-6-2, 3-2- 0 WCC) had their WCC title aspira- tions crushed, and the Toreros (10-4-4, 6-0-0 WCC) clinched a first-place fin- ish in the conference.
