USF Supports SFSU Ethnic Studies Program Facing Potential Budget Cuts

Brian Healy
Staff Writer

There are currently 61 undergraduate Ethnic Studies programs across universities in the United States. Many offer the study of race, ethnicity, nation, and identity under a different academic heading, but all of them, including USF, built their programs using the groundwork laid by nearby San Francisco State University. SFSU holds the legacy of having established the nation’s first and only independent College of Ethnic Studies, now in danger of losing staff and a number of offered courses to budget cuts. Different USF organizations are now standing in solidarity with the students who are fighting to maintain the College of Ethnic Studies. SF Raises Tobacco Purchase Age to 21

Staff Editorial

On March 1 San Francisco City Supervisors unanimously voted to change the legal age to purchase tobacco products from 18 years of age to 21. Boston, New York City, and the state of Hawaii have already raised the minimum age for tobacco sales to 21. Supervisor Scott Wiener, who took the lead on passing this piece of legislation, argues that this will help dissuade those under the age of 21 from becoming lifelong smokers. Opponents of the new law, largely tobacco industry members, argue that California law, which has an age minimum of 18, should overrule any municipal law regarding the issue. However, unless California state law wants to step in, the change will go into effect on June 1 of this year. Continue reading SF Raises Tobacco Purchase Age to 21

Although the University has yet to make an official response, BSU President Sarah Toutant and Fitzgerald have met several times since the demands were introduced to address the items that are included in the list.  In the very first episode of her new TBS show “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee,” Samantha Bee introduced a segment called “Elected Paperweight Of The Month.” As a fan of Bee’s work on Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show,” this seemed like familiar territory; I assumed Bee would probably call out some conservative congressman, critique his platform, crack some jokes about his mustache or constituents or whatever. Basic late-night comedy stuff. Yawn. Continue reading Samantha Bee Refuses To Pull Punches On New Late-Night Show

It is not very often that a student is able to watch two Coachella acts perform just steps away from their usual study spot in the library or their favorite booth in the cafeteria. This past Saturday night, CAB brought AlunaGeorge and Cold War Kids to campus for a night of nonstop energy and boundless enjoyment.
