Staff writer Paulina Galoostian has the story on Margaret Cho’s newest comedy show “Mother” The Asian-American comedian
Margaret Cho returned to her hometown of San Francisco on Saturday Oct. 12, 2013. Her hilarious comedy show entitled “Mother” was held at the beautiful Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium. Cho has been recognized by comedy fans to be one of the funniest women in America and was also the recipient the American Comedy Award for Best Comedian in 1994. Additionally, Cho has been in a few movies and TV shows. Her most recent project is her role in the television show, “Drop Dead Diva”, where she plays a very upbeat and bubbly paralegal assistant.
Cho said, “It’s always great and very exciting to come back to where I grew up. I love coming back to San Francisco for work and for other things like getting my tattoos. It is a familiar and warm place for me.”
Though Cho has performed in San Francisco many times before, she says that this new tour comes from a different perspective. “I have written all new material from a new perspective. The reason the show is called “Mother” is because I have reached a place in my work where I have become a mother to everyone in the profession,” said Cho.
Comedy is a very difficult industry to pursue. Many of our readers may be interested in entering the world of comedy for it is an art of expression. It takes a while to build confidence, networks, and a name for yourself but according to Cho, “it’s all about being in it for a long time and pursuing it. You grow up with the industry and you grow to be more comfortable at it. You can be very happy with this career it’s just a very long process”.
What led shy Cho to this career? “I didn’t have another alternative. I didn’t want to do anything else. It meant everything to me and I had nothing to lose. My parents’ support meant the world to me as well,” said Cho.
Being in the world of comedy opened many doors for this comedian. With her character Teri Lee on “Drop Dead Diva,” Cho wishes she had more of her character’s put togetherness and loving personality. She also adds that comedy is something that you have to really want to do and Cho adds that personally it takes a lot more then acting.
What is even more impressive about Cho’s career is her contribution to the Korean culture and the LGBT community. These are common themes that are used in her skits. Many of her jokes pertain to race and sexuality—and they are funny! She said “more conservative people would freak out when I was younger but now that I am older and I’ve been around for so long many people have grown to appreciate my jokes and themes.” This has lead Cho to receive awards for humanitarian efforts on the behalf of the Asian community, women, and the LGBT community.
