Smitten Ice Cream
Hayes Valley

This cute ice cream shop uses liquid nitrogen to make the perfect scoop of ice cream! The texture of the ice cream is unique and all ingredients are hand-picked and natural. Their seasonal flavors change monthly.

The Foghorn recommends: On the menu this month, try their mint-chocolate-chip flavor!

Bi-Rite
Western Addition

Located in the Bi-Rite organic grocery store, yes grocery store, you will find various combinations of ice cream flavors such as balsamic strawberry and white chocolate raspberry swirl. Although there is usually a line before you can satisfy your sweet tooth, it goes by quickly and is worth the wait.

The Foghorn recommends: Coffee toffee made with Ritual coffee! Yum, yum, yum….

Mitchell’s
The Mission

Mitchell’s ice cream has been on San Jose Avenue at 29th Street for 60 years! With unique flavors like cinnamon snap and peppermint candy, there’s something for everyone. For the holidays you should try their homemade eggnog. It’s creamy, sweet and only available from Nove mber to January.

The Foghorn recommends: Be daring and try the horchata flavor that comes with a swirl of cinnamon honey!

Gelateria Naia
North Beach

Pick up your shoveled spoons and head to Gelateria Naia! The Italian-chic gelato spot is located in the heart of North Beach serving both gelato and sorbetto. The word “gelato” is Italian for “ice cream.” Unlike ice cream, however, gelato uses more milk than cream to be made and has less fat.  If you don’t feel like making the trek to North Beach, Naia also sells gelato bars at local grocery markets such as the Lucky’s on Masonic and Fulton.

The Foghorn recommends: Keep it simple, stick to the chocolate gelato!

Over the Moon
Marina

Over the Moon accurately calls themselves “a San Francisco creamery with a retro bent”. With locations in both the Marina and the Embarcadero, you can enjoy homemade ice cream flavors like Whiskey Praline and Nutter Butter Banana, recommended with Grandma Millie’s freshly baked cookies. Over the Moon’s freshly made ice cream sandwich cookies are fan favorites!

The Foghorn recommends: Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla Bean paired with freshly baked butterscotch cookies.
