Students Against Stigma — Challenging the Misconceptions of Mental Illness

“One in four people will deal with mental illness sometime in their life,” started Carmen Lee, the founder and developer of Stamp Out Stigma. Mental illness is still a highly taboo and negative topic in our society, and despite its prevalence, “three out of four people with mental illness say that they have been stigmatized.” Stigma shows that society has yet to treat mental illness as a part of life. Race, Culture, and its Effects on the Classroom

“It wouldn’t be appropriate for school to teach us about being black, it might exclude someone,” said one of the boys Christy Byrd interviewed while researching for her doctorate.

Byrd’s work focuses on race and culture in schools. Students are not really taught about their race while in the classroom. When she asked students what it meant to be black, and if they learned it in school, the students admitted that no, it was not.One student answered the question by saying, “My mom teaches me about it. STUDENTS SHARE THEIR UNCONVENTIONAL PATHS TO USF

Student Senate hosted the “It Gets Bet- ter with Age” event on Nov. 6 in the Kalmanovitz Hall Amphitheatre. The event was a forum where USF students ages 24 and over got to tell their stories, in addition to sharing how they got to USF. The event was hosted by Tyler Warner, a senior finance major and the Students of Non-Traditional Age Representative of Undergraduate Senate. Presidential Inauguration: A Celebration of Student Life

McLaren Conference Center was covered in student research projects, art, and volunteer work presentations last Wednesday to celebrate student life as part of the events honoring the inauguration of the Rev. Paul Fitzgerald, S.J. Resources, Empire, and Labour: What USF Can Learn From the Mining Industry

David Leadbeater, associate professor at Laurentian University, presented his new book, Resources, Empire and Labour: Crises, Lessons and Alternatives, to the USF community on Oct. 15 and led a discussion with international studies professors Chris Loperena and Anne Bartlett surrounding the global mining boom and how the boom has led to violent conflict, protest, and social disruption.  The event also informed the community about new research on the crises and the actions that local communities around the world are taking to address the situation. The Working College Student

With college tuition prices rising each semester, many students turn to jobs, in addition to federal aid, scholarships, and loans, to pay for their tuition. There are currently 6,745 undergraduate students attending USF, and many of them are splitting their time between jobs, classes, and studying.

Dig for Treasure at the Flea

Every last weekend of the month, Treasure Island fills up with food trucks, artisanal goods — ranging from ceramics to statues, jewelry, furs, clothing, oddities — and delicate little trinkets from past decades.
