Track & Field: Making a Run in Berkeley

Last Friday and Saturday the men’s and women’s track teams competed in the Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, California. The Dons finished well in multiple events but were most dominant in the triple jump.

Friday on the mens side, freshman Adrian Shocks placed first overall in the triple jump posting a distance of 13.88 m. Freshman Mohamed Aziz ran the 1500m in 3:58.28, good enough for 13th overall. In the same event, sophomore Omar Solis ran a 4:05.58 to place 28th. Long distance runners, freshmen Quentin Purtzer and junior Nick Hicks ran in the 5000m event. They finished one after the other; Purtzer placed 22nd with a 15:05.19 and Hicks 23rd with a 15:06.23. Junior Robert Parker placed sixth in the javelin toss after a solid toss of 58.46 m. Senior Sean Gomes won his event, the 800m, with a burning time of 1:54.32. On Saturday Gomes ran the 800m again with a final time of 1:54.12, his second best of the season but only good enough for ninth on the day.

The womens team found much success inside the top 10 and even had a couple top three finishes. Freshmen Kenya Shakoor triple jumped for 11.51 meters to win the event. Later on Shakoor had her second best long jump of the season, 5.29 meters, to place sixth. Sophomore Daryl Phill earned fifth place in the 800 m after her time of 2:18.35. Phill, freshmen Kelsey Nielsen and freshmen Erin Thomas all ran the 1500 m. Phill ran a 4:38.91 for seventh place, Nielsen ran a 4:40.53 for tenth place and Thomas ran 4:48.61, her season best, for 21st place. Sophomore Asaundra Dalton ran the 100m dash in a blazing 12.30 seconds to earn second place. In the 400m dash sophomore Lupe Medina ran a season best 58.31 for sixth place and freshmen Skylar Fenton placed 11th with a time of 59.93. Medina and Fenton also ran the 200m dash. Fenton finished in 11th with a 26.20 and Medina 13th with a 26.44. In the 400m hurdles junior Eleni Fkiaras ran a 1:08.07 to finish in eighth place. Saturday, junior Kate Jamboretz, ran a 4:28.62 to place sixth in the 1500 m.

Next up for men’s and women’s track is the Payton Jordan/Cardinal Qualifier to be held at Stanford University on Sat. May 2. This will be their second to last meet before NCAA qualifiers.
