USF Supports SFSU Ethnic Studies Program Facing Potential Budget Cuts

There are currently 61 undergraduate Ethnic Studies programs across universities in the United States. Many offer the study of race, ethnicity, nation, and identity under a different academic heading, but all of them, including USF, built their programs using the groundwork laid by nearby San Francisco State University. SFSU holds the legacy of having established the nation’s first and only independent College of Ethnic Studies, now in danger of losing staff and a number of offered courses to budget cuts. Different USF organizations are now standing in solidarity with the students who are fighting to maintain the College of Ethnic Studies. BSU List of Demands: Administration’s Response Soon to Come

The University’s Black Student Union published a list of demands last December addressed to USF President the Rev. Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J., with a deadline for an action plan set to Feb. 1, 2016. Inspired by the calls for change that other black student organizations are making to university administrators across the country, the BSU focused on issues specific to black students on USF’s campus. Although the University has yet to make an official response, BSU President Sarah Toutant and Fitzgerald have met several times since the demands were introduced to address the items that are included in the list. ASUSF 3.1 Meeting Recap: MEChA Proposes Scholarship Fund for Undocumented Students

The ASUSF Senate meeting on March 1 drew a large crowd, and many members of the audience expressed their support of a resolution that USF’s Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán (MEChA) presented to the Senate. Members of MEChA along with ASUSF’s Senior Class Representative, Jonathan Munoz, submitted a resolution to implement a scholarship fund at USF to support undocumented students. Nursing Students’ Association Masquerade Gala

This past Saturday, Feb. 27 was the 2nd annual Nursing Students’ Association Masquerade Gala benefiting Family House in San Francisco. Approximately 80 students, as well as alumni, were in attendance at the event in the McLaren Conference Center. The night kicked off with a number from the SIX ASUSF Voices a capella group, which was followed by various other performances, including one from hypnotist Dave Hill. Jose de Acosta Lecture Emphasizes Ethics of Climate Change

Almost every seat was filled in Fromm Hall’s Xavier Auditorium on Feb. 24 where students and faculty gathered for USF’s 8th annual José de Acosta lecture. The aptly named lecture this year was “Climate Change & Sustainability: What’s Physics, Ethics, and Communication Got to Do With it?” presented by Dr. Jim White. Currently the director of the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Dr. White gave a succinct, engaging talk comparing the intertwining governing laws of physics and ethics that shape how anthropogenic climate change is going to affect the world and everyone in it.
