Pasj’s “Shortcuts”: A Night of Expression

When hearing performing arts and social justice put together in a major, one might wonder what that entails. At the University of San Francisco, students in the performing arts and social justice (PASJ) major use their abilities as artists and performers to celebrate diversity in culture and values. As ‘artist-activists,’ a title they have coined,  they reflect on important issues of our times and aim to create a more just and humane society. Using musical pieces and dance as expression, PASJ provides its students with opportunities to express themselves through original songs, dances, monologues, and musical theater hand-picked for this very event. “Hafu: The Mixed Race Experience in Japan”

Have you ever felt like an outsider when attempting to immerse yourself in a culture different from yours? For those of us who have ever vacationed overseas or studied abroad, it can be easy to find yourself right on the brink of a country’s cultural pool. But what happens when people from your own culture or race keep you on the outside? USF’s Center of Asia Pacific Studies held an on-campus screening of Megumi Nishikawa’s “Hafu: The Mixed Race Experience in Japan,” which explores obstacles that multi-racial and multicultural people experience. Following the lives of five “hafus,” or people who are half-Japanese, each of these individuals share the battle of overcoming alienation. Journeying to self-discovery, each hafu finds a balance in identity through trial and error, and ultimately self-acceptance.

Tuning Into KUSF’s Rock ‘n’ Swap

Vinyl enthusiasts and music connoisseurs alike gathered at KUSF.org’s first Rock ‘N’ Swap of the semester. Collectors and buyers came from all different generations and backgrounds, and arrived from various places for this all-day event. However, Rock ‘N’ Swap was more than just large collections of vintage records and oddities, crated and ready to be purchased. De Young Serves After Hours Art On the House

The De Young Museum knows how to entice patrons from art connoisseurs to roaming tourists. With their widely advertised “Free Friday Nights at the De Young,” there is almost no excuse to not experience the abundance of themed installations, performances, and art pieces the museum has to offer.
