Last Friday, USF’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to revoke Bill Cosby’s honorary degree. Following in the footsteps of other Jesuit institutions like Marquette and Fordham, USF has decided to take away the honorary degree from Cosby on the basis of his behavior, which was deemed inconsistent with the school’s mission. White House press secretary Josh Earnest has announced that President Obama would like the U.S. government to accept approximately 10,000 refugees from Syria in the next fiscal year. This is a considerable increase from the current number of refugees in the country as, according to NPR, the number in June 2015 was less than a thousand. Considering the rapid increase of refugees that is overwhelming the European Union, should the United States increase their acceptance of refugees as well? Don on the Street: Is Politics More Important than Justice?

April 24, 2015 marked 100 years since the Armenian Genocide happened in which about 1.5 million Armenians (as well as Assyrians and Ottoman Greeks) were killed by the Ottoman Turks. To this day the United States and the United Kingdom fail to recognize the genocide in order to please their ally Turkey, who refuses to label what happened as a genocide. Don on the Street: Should the 7 suspended police officers be fired?

Last week seven police San Francisco police officers were suspended for racist and homophobic text messages they were caught exchanging. Some text messages even spoke of lynching African Americans and burning crosses. The San Francisco Police Chief has recommended they be fired. What do you think? Should they be fired, or should they be allowed back on the force after their suspension and face other kinds of consequences such as intensive sensitivity training?
