UNIVERSITY OF GRENOBLE-ALPES
Grenoble, FranceA team of researchers at the University of Grenoble-Alpes in southeastern France have found that men with higher levels of the hormone testosterone have a tendency toward spicy food. The study, titled, “Some Like It Hot,” which was published in the journal, Physiology and Behavior, gathered men ages 18 to 44 to eat a meal of mashed potatoes, pepper sauce and salt. The men who were able to take the heat — some adding more hot sauce to their food — were also found to have higher testosterone levels in their saliva. Although a correlation has been established, the researchers insist that more work needs to be done to account for how “genetics, physiological, psychological and social forces influence the liking and consumption” of spicy foods. FREE UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA
Okene, Nigeria

The Free University of Nigeria (FUN) is under federal investigation by the Nigerian government after allegations that the ‘university’ is operating illegally as a scam. FUN is touted as Africa’s first non-profit, tuition-free, cloud-based higher education institution where students could earn a four-year degree for free online. The now defunct website for FUN stated that accreditation from Nigeria’s National Universities Commission was underway, but the commission posted a bulletin on Nov. 3 stating there are currently 57 illegal degree-awarding higher education institutions operating in Nigeria, and that eight of them are undergoing either federal investigation or court action, including FUN.  Continue reading College News From Around The World

Athens, Greece

On Oct. 30, the Dean of the Univer- sity of Athens, Theodoros Fortsakis, and some faculty members were taken “hostage” by approximately 50 students. University administrators recently hired a private security company to patrol the campus, upsetting students. Fortsakis thus invited a group of students to at- tend a board meeting to express their disapproval over the hiring decision, and to voice concerns over campus se- curity. When tensions began to escalate, the students locked Fortsakis and his colleagues in the room where the board meeting took place, and staged an out- door protest on campus to demonstrate their disapproval over the issue. UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN

Canadian artist Jaime Black aims to raise awareness of Canada’s missing or murdered Aboriginal women by putting up an installation art piece at the University of Saskatchewan. The REDress Project was launched in 2010 in Black’s hometown of Winnipeg, and has since spread to college campuses and other public spaces across the country. Black collects donations of red dresses from the public, and then hangs the clothing from trees and buildings. The Native Women’s Association of Canada has estimated that over 600 Aboriginal women have gone missing since 1994, and the United Nations has recently launched an inquiry to investigate the issue. NATIONAL AUTONOMOUS UNIVERSITY OF MEXICO
Mexico City, Mexico

In late September, six protesting students were killed and another 43 went missing after being attacked by police and masked gunmen in the southern Mexican city of Iguala during a protest for education reform. Students at UNAM held a two-day protest in support of finding the missing students after weeks of uncertainty, citing the Mexican government’s lack of transparency in their search and its ties to drug trafficking group, Guerreros Unidos, as signs of institutionalized corruption. Amid the spread of protests throughout the country, the governor of Guerrero state, Angel Aguirre, stepped down from office last Thursday. Continue reading College News from Around the World
