This editorial is not an indictment against Father Fitzgerald or this institution. Instead, it strives to refer to patriarchal hegemonic discourses concerning the sexual assault implied in his interview that are also reproduced and perpetuated across the media and dominant narratives. To the Editor:

I write to clarify any confusion or concern my brief remarks about sexual assault in the March 12 Foghorn interview may have caused members of the campus community.  My full commitment to the safety and well-being of all students and employees, women and men, especially in matters of sexual violence and sexual harassment, may not have been communicated effectively, and for that I am sorry.

For the record, I believe that sexual violence is a heinous crime and a grievous sin. Much worse than other crimes, it is an affront to the innate dignity of victims who are women created in the image and likeness of God. Continue reading Father Fitzgerald Responds to Interview Reactions

USF Warmly Welcomes the Rev. Paul J. Fitzgerald as 28th University President

The inauguration ceremony on Saturday of Rev. Paul J. Fitzgerald, S.J. wasn’t all formalities. One of Fitzgerald’s oldest friends and one of the ceremony’s distinguished guest speakers, Janet Napolitano, recalled attending college with the newly chosen president. “We even went to prom together,” Napolitano said as the audience erupted in laughter, before adding, “I have pictures.” Continue reading USF Warmly Welcomes the Rev.
