24 of the 28 US Jesuit Colleges and Universities Discuss Islam

This past week, USF hosted members from 24 of the 28 American Jesuit universities. Two full days and the entirety of the Fromm complex was dedicated to discussing an increasingly pressing issue: the presence of Islamic and Muslim culture on Jesuit campuses.

On Apr. 10 and 11, the overall objective was to examine the evolution of the mission of Catholic Jesuit universities in light of the growth of Islamic studies and the increase in Muslim faculty, staff, and students on campus. Gender-Inclusive Initiatives Implemented

The Insurance Non-Discrimination Act was passed in the state of California in 2006. However, it wasn’t until Apr. 13 of last year that California’s Department of Managed Health (DMHC) ordered California’s health plans to officially remove any kind exclusions of coverage based on gender identification or expression. Now, beginning Aug. 1, 2015 USF will take big steps in following California’s establishment of gender equality. It is through the efforts of the USF student body, LGBTQ Caucus, Health Promotion Services (HPS), and the USF Leadership team that our health insurance plan will now comply with California’s Insurance Gender Nondiscrimination Act that prohibits insurance companies from discriminating against those of the transgender community. In 2002, USF created the well-used student portal USF Connect. Thirteen years later on March 16th 2015, USF made the official switch from USF Connect to a new and improved portal, MyUSF.

The USF Leadership team approved the transition of USF Connect to MyUSF in February 2014, as it was decided that there needed to be a change in both function and format. The project officially started in June of 2014. Continue reading Connect to myUSF

Global Women Rights Forum: Empowering Strong Women

In the two weeks before Spring Break, USF hosted the 14th annual Global Women’s Rights Forum.  The event, spread over the course of four evenings, was coordinated by Professor Dorothy Kidd, chair of the media studies department, and Professor Elizabeth Friedman of the politics department. Each evening was intended to pose interesting and relevant questions in relation to modern women’s rights, not only in the United States, but across the globe. Speak Out and Listen In: Hundreds of Students Openly Discuss Discrimination in a Social Justice Context

Clapping, weeping, laughing, snapping, hissing — students, faculty, and audience members did not hesitate to make their opinions known at last week’s day-long event, Speak Out and Listen In: A Teach-In On Building Community Power.

Speakers including Clarence B. Jones — former political advisor, counsel, and draft speechwriter for Martin Luther King Jr. — stepped in front of an audience of hundreds of students, faculty, and community members on Feb. 24 to speak about the injustices African Americans currently experience. He was accompanied by fellow commentators from the San Francisco Police Department, founders of community organizations, USF Faculty, and student leaders.
