This past Sunday the Dons went up against opponents Santa Clara University and came out with a win of 2-1 at Stevens Stadium. This match was one for the books as the Dons came through in the last minute to win the closely played match. The first half was not in the Dons favor as not many chances were created by their players. The same cannot be said for the second half of the match however, when both teams came into scoring opportunities and put up numbers on the scoreboard. For the Dons, they totaled four shots with all of them on target. As for the Broncos, they chalked up 17 shots with six on target. Despite the Dons firing less shots off, they were able to play efficiently and ultimately succeed.
The Dons were the first team to put numbers on the scoreboard in the 82nd minute. Midfielder Santiago Digiuseppe was able to score his goal from 15 yards out off an assist from midfielder Davi Ramos. The ball was crossed in from the left wing by defender Kamron Crow that was then headed to Digiuseppe by Ramos. However, the celebration of this first goal was short-lived as the Broncos were able to pull even on a penalty in the 85th minute. Despite this bad luck, the Dons were able to overcome this small mishap and score another goal in the 90th minute. Forward David Garrett took the Dons to victory with his third goal of the season. Garrett made a run down the right wing and was given a through ball from Digiuseppe, which allowed Garrett to slot the ball into the far corner from 15-yards out. Digiuseppe had two shots by the end of the match, which were both on target.
The Dons and Broncos were neck at neck throughout the majority of the match. Much of the match was characterized by the Broncos attack, however the Dons defense was able to withstand their advances. The Broncos had their best chance during the first half when player Alfred Edmonds took a shot in front of the USF net, however Dons keeper Andre Glasnovic swatted it away. Another chance was made when player Parker Holland made a final attempt on goal. Glasnovic yet again came to the rescue and saved the attempt on goal. Glasnovic made a total of five saves by the end of the night. This away match left the Dons with a record of 3-9-0, 1-0-0 in WCC play. This marked the first victory for the Dons in the West Coast Conference. Coach Eddie Sato was extremely excited about this first win during WCC play. Sato remarked that although the Dons didn’t have a very good first half, they were able to pull through offensively and defensively.
Next up for the Dons will be a match against the University of the Pacific on the 17th of October at 7 pm.
