Last week, Dr. Charles Salmon, one of the finalists for the dean of college of arts & sciences, withdrew from the search. He was originally scheduled to be interviewed on Nov. 8 and 9.

A USFconnect message was sent on Nov. 5 to announce his withdrawal.

In a statement submitted to the search committee, Dr. Salmon said, “This decision was not an easy one to make, as I have a great deal of respect for the institution and its mission. Nevertheless, after giving this matter a great deal of thought and discussing it with my family, I have decided to pursue another option.”

Dr. Salmon is currently a professor at Michigan State University. He is a Brandt Professor in
public relations and served as dean for the college of communication arts and sciences from 2004 to 2009.
The search committee was unable to submit a response on Dr. Salmon’s decision because, “As in all faculty searches, the information is confidential.”

Current candidate Dr. Michael McCann was the last to be interviewed in the search process. All the interviews occurred on Nov. 10 and 11.

The other two remaining finalists are Dr. Marcelo Camperi and Dr. Nicola Pitchford.

Gerardo Marin, chair of the search committee, looks forward as “the search continues and we have three excellent and very well qualified finalists. We are looking forward to concluding the search at the end of this week and to making a recommendation to the provost.”

The search committee began the quest for a new dean of arts and scientists in the beginning of fall semester. According to the search website, “A large pool of qualified candidates was reviewed by the members of the search committee and a group of pre-finalists was interviewed during the first few days of Oct. 2010.”

The dean for the college of arts and sciences will be responsible for over 60 programs with 3,100 undergraduate students and 700 graduate students. In addition, the dean will oversee almost 500 faculty members and 122 staff members. The position entails that he/she review and develop academic programs, manage the college’s budget, promoting the vision of USF.
