PLACE: B. Patisserie (2821 California St. @ Divisadero)

PRICE: Kouign Amann – $4.25

From the moment you first enter b. Patisserie, hunger immediately washes over as your eyes feast on row upon row of crisp pastries. The feeling is best described as utter infatuation with an irresistible craving. You are transported to a warm Parisian hideaway, with walls of ivory tile and gray marble tabletops. There is a sense of simplicity and ease in the b. Patisserie experience, a warm energy conveyed through the bright yellow wooden chairs and the warmth of the atmosphere. A small glass wall separates you from a delectable display of viennoiserie (French for “flakey pastries”), making it nearly impossible to choose just one.

The kouign amann is b. Patisserie’s most sought after delight. The French pastry (pronounced like “queen-a-mon”) is a fantastic new coffee companion with a savory, sweet crunch. Its flakey texture is similar to that of a croissant, yet the kouign amann is circular and slightly resembles a crown. This regal baked good is offered with a seasonal flavor as well, and autumn brings forth delicate pumpkin layers. The dough is baked slowly until the exterior is crisp and the sugary interior is softened to perfection. Every bite rings with a honey-like sweetness. In addition, the patisserie serves locally brewed Four Barrel Coffee. Pair together one kouign amann and one bitter jolt of coffee for under $10.

There is a sense of simplicity and ease in the b. Patisserie experience, a warm energy conveyed through the bright yellow wooden chairs and the warmth of the atmosphere. There is a sense of freedom in the vast, glass frontier wall, beckoning any passerby for company and conversation.

Beyond the charming environment, the best part about b. Patisserie’s kouign amann is that it’s light enough to enjoy every last crumb, without discouraging you from trying another (or every last) pastry on display.
