Saturday’s Stanford Invitational had all the ingredients necessary for a dish served cold. Following the USF Invitational that saw the Stanford men and women’s teams place first, the stage was set for a rematch. Both Dons teams fell short in their quest for payback against Stanford on Saturday, but still performed well among a field that included Pac-12 and WCC contenders. The men finished in fourth place as a team, and the women came in sixth.

Sophomore Eric Causey had the highest individual finish for the Dons, coming in at fourth overall in the 8,000-meter men’s race on the Stanford Golf Course. Causey ran the nearly five-mile course in 24:48. He was followed by teammates junior Jarrett Moore coming in at 13th, and sophomore Nick Hicks in 28th place.

Stanford took first in the team scoring for the men, followed by Loyola Marymount and North Dakota State.

On the Women’s Side

Finishing with a combined team score of 178, the women beat out WCC rivals such as St. Mary’s and San Diego, making the trip to Stanford well worth it. Junior Kate Jamboretz made her first appearance of the season, and lived up to the expectations of Head Coach Helen Lehman-Winters.

“Our plan was for her to go out very relaxed and then move gradually and comfortably into the top 10 and this is exactly what she did,” Lehman-Winters told usfdons.com.

Jamboretz finished in 10th place with a time of 21:43 in the 6,000-meter (3.7 mile) race. The next Dons to cross the finish line were freshman Lily Engelbrekt, who finished with a time of 22:47, and freshman Daryl Phill, coming in at 23:00.

While the Dons came up empty handed looking for retribution against Stanford, the future bodes well for them in the WCC season as they finished atop the likes of San Diego, Pepperdine, St. Mary’s and Santa Clara. In the coming weeks, USF will send a representative to South Bend, Indiana at the Notre Dame Invitational on Oct. 4, and also Sacramento State’s Hornet Jamboree that will serve as a preview of the 2013 NCAA West Invitational.
