Women’s Tennis: Two Tourneys

This past weekend the tennis team took part in both the Nike Invitational which was held in Berkeley, CA and the ITA All-American Pre-Qualifiers which took place in Pepperdine, CA.

Doubles partners freshman Shanna Dos Santos and junior Genevieve McCloskey got past Cal duo Audrey Mayer and Stephanie Lin, 8-5, to advance past the first round. Unfortunately in the semifinals the pair of Dons were defeated in a tie break teeth clencher 8-7(5), Marine Dans and Sybille Gauvain of San Jose State were victorious. Dons End Three-Game Losing Streak, Sink Gonzaga and Portland

The Dons rebounded nicely from their Tuesday loss to Pacific in Stockton, Calif. with two huge victories against Gonzaga and Portland on Thursday and Saturday.

Thursday night’s tilt against Gonzaga was a grueling match, as both teams duked it out until the fifth and final set. After USF came out of the gate with two set wins, the Bulldogs battled back with two victories of their own to force a decisive fifth set. However, the Dons were able to come out on top 15-11 when Junior Outside Hitter Katarina Pilepic, who paced the team with 23 kills, hit a floater that broke through the Bulldogs’ defense. Dons End Three-Game Losing Streak, Sink Gonzaga and Portland

Dons Outpaced by Roadrunners and Mustangs

This past Thursday, the Dons battled against CSU Bakersfield at home and suffered a narrow loss of 2-1. The Dons were able to get ahead in the first half from a goal that was scored by midfielder freshman Sean Bowman in the 44th minute. Despite this early advantage, the Dons were unable to hold their lead and the Roadrunners were able to pull ahead by the end of the match. The Roadrunners took off 14 shots with five on target while the Dons only managed to get six shots off with two on target. Although the Dons were outshot, they managed to keep good possession in the first half, which led them to their goal in the 44th minute.
